How do I obtain images for my coffee mug business?
I am hoping to start a side business making mugs with either photos or clipart. The problem is I don't know how I can legally obtain images for my mugs because I'm not an artist or photographer. I can easily ask people to submit personal photos they want imprinted on their mug but in order to expand my business I'll need to offer a lot more. I've looked online for images but they all have copyright regulations. I've even searched for images that state they can be used for commercial use but I'm worried that I can still get into legal trouble for using them on my mugs. If anyone can answer the following I'd greatly appreciate it:
1. How can I get images for my mugs? Is it possible I can get them for free somewhere?
2. How can I have words imprinted on my mugs? For example, if I want my mug to say "I love my mommy" how do I create those words? Do I just type it on my computer using Microsoft Word and print it on transfer paper? Do I need to use photoshop?
Did you do your five-year business plan to see if this business will work out and you'll be in business five years from now? I ask because coffee mugs aren't the "in" thing anymore.
How much of an artist does someone have to be to place a typed message on there from a photo program? Not much. There is a lot of free clipart out there but you can also hire someone to do that for you. You can choose a few popular phrases or make your own, not a big deal. Or you can findsomeone (like a sales person artise from CafePress) and ask them if you can sell some of their products.
Have you determined how you will put those images on the mugs yet? Or the types of mugs you will initially buy? Even books today are done "upon request" which means you have a couple of samples made and then only do the mugs up when the order comes in. There are programs on the net (I think places like Hallmark) where you submit your photo and they can put it on a mug or carryall or anything else you desire. If it's already out there for the public why then do you want to start a business doing that? Well the reason is that they would want "your particular sayings or pictures" therefore get out there and get creative and take a picture of something you like or make a drawing and be exclusive.
Then you're asking questions of how to put it on the mugs, seems you haven't researched this yet or researched it enough. Go to someplace that sells Avery labels (they will also sell the paper to print out your mug pictures on), someplace like Staples. You would use photoshop only if you want to and that would be to square off the picture or clean up the picture or to add words to a picture and some photoshop programs are expensive so that would mean you'd have to sell a lot of mugs to pay for it. And you'd also need a business license. Do the five year plan first. Seems maybe you'd not be making a profit on this or enough to survive.
