NHL â History of Chicago Blackhawks
There are a number of great Hockey teams that make up the National Hockey League, and each of them has a rich history of tradition and loyalty. One of these teams is the Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks are a team based out of Chicago, IL, and they currently play in the Central Division of the Western Conference. The Chicago Blackhawks have had a history of winning ever since they have been in the NHL. They have won a total of 14 division titles and three Stanley Cups during their existence. They, along with five others, make up the original six teams of the NHL and play in the United Center in Chicago. Previous to now, they played all of their home games at the Chicago Center but have since improved their playing facilities.
The history of the Chicago Blackhawks goes all the way back to their inception in 1926. They were a part of the first expansion and they were first owned by Frederic McLaughlin who had made his fortune in the sales of coffee. He had served in World War I, and often times his team was referred to as the "Blackhawk Division". They were nicknamed this after a Native American named Chief Black Hawk. The name stuck and McLaughlin eventually named the hockey team after that.
Some of the Blackhawk's best years came in the 1930's where they won the Stanley Cup in both 1934 and also 1938. Their goalie at the time of the first championship (Charlie Gardiner) was voted the best goalie in the NHL. In 1938 the team was led by goalie Mike Karakas and defenseman Earl Seibert, and they beat the Toronto Maple Leafs in order to secure their second national championship. About six years later they would again advance to the Stanley Cup Finals only to be ousted by the Montreal Canadiens. That year they would have their famous "pony line" composed of future Hall of Famers Doug Bentley, Mark Bentley, and Bill Mosienko. They were nicknamed the "pony line" because they were small but they were all quick.
After the 1944 trip to the finals the Blackhawks dropped out of serious contention for almost 17 years. During this period of time they only went to the post season four times, and frequently placed dead last in their division.  The only real shining moments were Al Rollins' and Max Bentley's Hart memorial trophies.
In 1961, the Blackhawks pulled it together and won another championship with the help of teammates Glenn Hall, Pierre Pilote, Bobby Hull, and Stan Mikita. Since that time, Chicago has been one of the steadiest teams in the NHL and have consistently made it to the playoffs. Some notable players during this time period were Denis Savard and Doug Wilson in the eighties and Ed Belfour and Chris Chelios in the nineties.
The Chicago Blackhawks are continuing to try and relive their days of NHL glory from the thirties and the sixties and look to have a good shot at rebuilding the team and getting back into that kind of position.
